Does any one know if the Matchbox 1-75 range which has used various scales over the years, ever used 1:72? Reason I ask is I have just restored a Jaguar D-Type
Thank you for your time. |

Have found out that the Matchbox/Lesney Jaguar 'D'-Type No. 41A from 1957 is to a scale of 1:71, that will do for me!
This will go well with Hongwell's Modern Jaguar's. 'real' D-type length:- 3912mm - Matchbox 55.16mm gets us 70.92095722 'real' D-Type wheelbase:- 2294mm - Matchbox 32.81mm gets us 69.91770802 I used a Mitutoyo Digimatic Caliper on the Matchbox model and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust for the D-Type dimensions. Please bear in mind that the axel ends are worn and that the over all length of the casting is veriable, after all the model is nearly 50 years old... Also be aware that real vehicles length can very due to manufacturing constrants. Hi Martin,
Here's a list of Matchbox Regular Wheels in the scale range of 1/70 - 1/74. I cannot guarantee its accuracy or completeness, but it generally seems to make sense. However it gives a scale of 1/70 for the second D Type (41B), and 41A was listed as 1/78. Are you sure you have 41A? I also like looking out for 1/72 models by different makes - 1960s Matchbox are ideal as they are nice and realistic in comparison to most of the later Superfast. Re: Matchbox 1:72 Jaguar D-Type

Hi Martin,
Yes, there are 2 different Matchbox D-Type Jaguars. The second was available 1960-5. It is similar to the first one but slightly larger (about 62mm long). This model comes with several different wheels, including cast spokes with separate tyres. However, the size would make it much larger than 1/70, so the list I have appears to be wrong regarding this model. Shows you can't rely on everything you're told!! At least your 41A is about the right size! The 57C Forward Control Land Rover Fire Engine is not in the list but looks good next to a Hongwell Land Rover (it is a fraction wider). I often look out for other makers' models which might make nice 1/72 additions to the collection - sometimes I'm right and sometimes I turn out to be wrong. Jason |

Well done - the Cresta is a nice model which seems to be quite sought after (some colour schemes particularly so). How does this look scalewise next to your Hongwells?
One of my favourite old Matchbox toys is the A55 Austin Cambridge (Farina) in 2-tone green. Jason |

Hi Jason,
Thank you for your answer, the Cresta looks bloody good next to the Bel Aire's, I will restore it in the new year, am thinking of joining a metalwork class (again...) at a school in York, England and make a vac-form mould for the windows, will keep you informed how I get along! I don't like the pink colour it is in, but the pastels of the Bel Aire's work well, so I may, just may, allow pink up my spray gun, don't know how it will feel as it's normally Luftwaffe colours that go up it!!! Regards and best wishes for the new year! Martin of Martsmodels |

Of Matchbox Jaguar XK140
|
I have found another Matchbox 1:72 model! 1.00 at a boot sale!
After a bit of number crunching the Matchbox/Lesney Jaguar XK140 -Type No. 32 from 1957 is to a scale of 1:72. This will go well with Hongwell's Modern Jaguar's. 'real' XK140 length:- 4470mm - Matchbox 59.17mm gets us 75.54 'real' XK140 wheelbase:- 2591mm - Matchbox 37.37mm gets us 69.33 75.54 + 69.33 = 144.87 divided by 2 gets us 72.435 I used a Mitutoyo Digimatic Caliper on the Matchbox model and '100 Years of Sports cars' by Caxton Editions. Please bear in mind that the axel ends are worn and that the over all length of the casting is veriable, after all the model is nearly 50 years old... Also be aware that real vehicles length can very due to manufacturing constrants. Hope this adds something to the 'Sum Total of Hongwell Knowledge'!!! |

Matchbox Chevy Van is marked as 1:74, I bought it just for that. Using data found on the internet and measuring my model I found this to be accurate. With some
modification, this will look nice next to a Hongwell van at 1:72.
